About
Make It Work Nevada was born out of the national Make It Work Campaign. The national campaign had a presence in multiple states with the purpose of organizing women of color around kitchen-table/economic issues such as affordable childcare, paid family leave, paid sick days and pay equity. When the national campaign sunset in 2017, we became a sole state-based entity: Make It Work Nevada.
While we've maintained the core tenants of the national campaign, Make It Work Nevada centers it's work and organizing around the experiences and challenges of Black women and women of color. As well, we've expanded the scope of our focus to include racial and reproductive justice because, in our experience, each of these issues informs the other and contributes to the gross disparity that our communities face in their day-to-day lives.
We approach our work uniquely disrupting the traditional methods of organizing in cultivating substantive and authentic relationships with community members that are trying to make it work. Our signature kitchen table conversations (KTC) are the anchor of our work in learning about the hardships and disparities that the women we work alongside face. KTC inform the actions we take on public policy at all levels of government whether it is a lack of affordable childcare or maternal mortality. If you're interested in hosting your own KTC, sign up below and help us #GetFreeTogether.
In order for us as poor and oppressed people to become a part of a society that is meaningful, the system under which we now exist has to be radically changed. It means facing a system that does not lend itself to your needs and devising means by which you can change that system. That is easier said than done.
